Virginia Union University (VUU) is pleased to recognize and honor Juneteenth with the Sounds of Freedom Celebration presented by The Hezekiah Walker Center For Gospel Music @ VUU. The event, which is free to the public, will feature Hezekiah Walker, one of the most iconic recording artists in gospel music, and over 10 gospel choirs handpicked by Walker, including the Virginia Union University Gospel Choir and more. Held on Saturday, June 19 from 4:30pm to 8pm, the event also will feature voter registration opportunities and highlight African American vendors.
African American spirituals and gospel music have long played an integral part in the freedom and civil rights fight of African Americans. It was from each other, faith and faith-filled music that African Americans were able to summon the strength and motivation to survive and rise above the inhumanness of slavery and the brutality of its aftermath to realize freedom.
As the nation slowly reopens amid continuing COVID-19 concerns and grapples with the vestiges of institutional racism, what better way to Celebrate Emancipation than through the very music that inspired freedom. We hope that you will join Hezekiah Walker's Center For Gospel Music and VUU to celebrate the power of faith and music as we continue to push for social justice.
